When I talk to acquaintances about sustainability, the first thing they almost always comment on is the choice of materials and transport. It is of course important to contribute to a circular society, but the more I learn the more I realize how many aspects there are to sustainability. Can the material be reused, can the transports be shortened, is the packaging recyclable? But perhaps the most important thing, to minimize resource consumption, the product should last for a long time – and if it breaks, it should be possible to repair it.
We collaborate with Zenit Design, which designs our products. Together, we recently conducted a very successful workshop to better understand how we can increase the sustainability of our products by making active choices already in the design phase. We looked at, for example, biodegradable plastic and learned how complex recycling is, where the use of mixed materials creates recycling problems. We discussed, among other things, how the right design creates products that live a long life, which is the most important from a life cycle perspective, and which are possible to repair and recycle and thus fit into a circular economy.
“We have identified some key factors to increase sustainability, where our designers are encouraged early on to think holistically and see – not just the production process – but the entire product life, how it can be reused and destroyed so that details can be recycled for new products,” says Carl. Forslund at Zenit Design.
