Last year, we conducted a life cycle analysis (LCA) of Mousetrapper Advance 2.0/2.0+ with the help of students from Linköping University. Even then, we knew there was great uncertainty, especially around the components of the circuit board, so we asked them to follow the LCA standard: If the origin is unknown, choose the worst-case scenario.
In reality, we believed things were better, but we wanted to avoid making assumptions. So how did it turn out?
To summarize briefly: last year’s LCA showed that the product emitted around 30 kg CO2e, while today’s LCA shows that the actual value is closer to 6.2 kg CO2e. That’s quite a difference – and compared to similar products, we believe this is a strong result we can be proud of.
This already applies to Advance 2.0+, where we’ve switched to recycled plastic and updated the entire chain. For the standard Advance 2.0, we’re not quite there yet, but once the current inventory is sold and all materials transition to recycled, that model will also reflect the same positive numbers – likely sometime next year.
How we conducted our new LCA
We hired Miljögiraff, specialists in life cycle analyses. They also have access to Ecoinvent, which provides the most reliable and up-to-date LCA data currently available. The work was carried out using a life cycle perspective according to the ISO 14040 standard (ISO, 2006a), with the help of EF 3.1, a method for performing impact assessments.
The life cycle analysis is now complete and has been validated by a third party, CHM Analytics.
Not everything is available in the Ecoinvent database – especially electronic components can be tricky. So, together with Miljögiraff, we inventoried every single component on the circuit board, noting its weight and origin, and then categorized them within Ecoinvent. This was supplemented with data such as energy consumption from our suppliers. All in all, this provides an assessment that is much closer to reality. Last year, we used very rough estimates and preferred to round up rather than down.
We take our work seriously
As a tech producer, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by how complex it is to work toward a sustainable society. But we’ve made the decision to do our best – and that means we’re constantly making improvements down to the smallest detail to minimize our impact. It also means we recognize that even this LCA will get better in the future. If we can obtain life cycle analyses from our suppliers at the component level, we’ll be able to fine-tune it even further. Because it’s not enough for Mousetrapper to act alone – many of these suppliers are large companies, and it takes pressure from more players in the industry to raise the bar. Still, we’re doing everything we can to push for change.
